The Importance of Cleaning Metal Panels

Metal panels, while known for their durability and long lifespan, still require proper maintenance and care. Annual cleanings are an imperative part of that maintenance. Keeping your metal panels clean will ensure their performance, eye-catching design, and strength for years to come.

Why is it so important to keep metal panels clean?

Dirt and residue, which can be caused by trees or animals, causes irreversible damage to the panel’s protective coating. This damage compromises the endurance of the entire system. Other corrosive elements, like bacteria and mildew, can damage the structural integrity of the system. Buildup of leaves can hide leaks, rotting spots, and even prevent the roof from reflecting heat – challenging the entire system’s energy efficiency.

How often should the metal panels be cleaned?

Metal panels should undergo an annual cleaning as a minimum. This will rinse away common elements that jeopardize the finishes. Panels under heavy tree cover should be cleaned more often. A deep cleaning should be performed every 3 to 5 years. This deep cleanse will remove more stubborn substances, such as tree sap and oxidation. Interim cleanings should be performed if you are in an area with high seasonal pollen or drastic weather events.

What else should I keep in mind?

It is extremely important to follow the panel manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning the panels. Manufacturer’s will know who should perform the job, what solutions to use, and which tools will work. If the cleaning is not done properly, you run the risk of voiding the warranty. We always recommend hiring a professional with metal panel experience to perform the deeper cleanings.

Cleaning Tips

One of the best things you can do for your metal panels is keep them free from debris. However, you should never use wire brushes or other abrasive materials that will scratch or erode the panel’s surface coating. For a simple cleaning, water and mild detergent will work. You can use a cloth or soft-bristle brush, and finally rinse with clean water. Avoid bleach at all costs!
